Wikipedia...
...Should I, or Shouldn't I?
In my opinion Wikipedia is an excellent source of knowledge. Yes, Wikipedia is created and updated by the individuals who use the powerful source of information. No, not all of the users are subject matter experts. But that is what makes the site work. If there is a topic that has not yet appeared on Wikipedia anyone who needs or wants to know something can put a very limited page up, Wikipedia calls this a skeleton. Most of the time within a few hours of being posted the page is loaded with necessary information.
Even when the pages have errors and false information on them, this simply leads to more corrections and information. If someone posts an error, that shows the original author that something within the article may be unclear, and it will be updated. Personally I am one hundred percent for Wikipedia because it gives a first hand approach in the search for knowledge. In a single minute the Encyclopedia Britannica 2007 edition can become out of date. Wikipedia on the other hand can be updated within the next minute.
After Hurricane Katrina, Wikipedia was one of the first sources of information with available information on the disaster. The people who were affected and able to get to their computers posted a page within minutes. The page was used to update outsiders who couldn’t get in touch with family and friends. Wikipedia was all anyone had for several days.
Wikipedia is something that I feel will never be approved by everyone, but it is an amazing way to gather information and it is presented in a way that sis easy to understand. It is a person to person source of information and I consider it a tragedy when people are not allowed to use it, or are not willing to give it a try.
