Tools of the Trade
Let’s take a shovel to it, he says.
Let’s bury
the layers of filth which litter our core.
This mountain of phone calls
that were never made,
or phone calls that were made, but weren’t you.
A history of hang ups
ending the night with a fuck
you,
or off,
or yourself.
A mass of inquiries beginning with,
“Who the hell is that?”
and ending with the bittersweet taste of blind faith.
Some pile of lies
stacked high above our heads but punched with just enough holes
so that we can look through.
The wall built over the span of years,
covered in the graffiti of our conflict,
Let’s take an axe to it, she says,
So it will crumble and decompose slowly into the earth.
